Just Got Engaged? 5 Things to Do First (From a Wedding Photographer)
First of all — CONGRATS 🤍
Getting engaged is one of the sweetest, most exciting seasons of your life. It’s also the moment when everything can start to feel a little overwhelming.
As a wedding photographer who has walked alongside many couples in this season, I’ve seen what helps and what causes unnecessary stress. So if you’re newly engaged and wondering what to do next, here are the first five steps I always recommend.
1. Soak It In Before You Plan
Before you open Pinterest or book a single vendor, take time to just enjoy being engaged.
Celebrate.
Tell your people.
Go on a date and talk about your future.
This season goes by fast, and it deserves to be savored — not rushed.
2. Talk Budget Early
It’s not the most glamorous conversation, but it’s one of the most important.
Sit down together (and with family if they’re contributing) and decide:
- Overall budget
- Top priorities
- Where you’re willing to splurge vs save
This makes every other decision easier.
3. Pick a General Date or Season
You don’t need an exact date yet, but narrowing down a season helps a lot.
Ask yourselves:
Do we love spring florals?
Dreaming of fall colors?
Want a cozy winter wedding?
Your season influences venue availability, photography style, and overall vibe.
4. Book Your Venue + Photographer Early
These two set the foundation for your entire day.
Your venue determines your date.
Your photographer preserves your memories.
Most couples book these 9–18 months out, especially for popular seasons. If you already love a photographer’s work, don’t wait too long to reach out.
5. Schedule Engagement Photos
Engagement sessions are more than pretty pictures for save-the-dates.
They help you:
- Get comfortable in front of the camera
- Learn how your photographer works
- Feel confident before the wedding day
By the time your wedding arrives, taking photos feels natural and easy instead of awkward.
Wedding planning doesn’t have to be stressful when you take it one step at a time.
Focus on what matters most: your relationship, your people, and the memories you’re creating together.
And if you’re looking for a photographer who will guide you through the process and make you feel comfortable every step of the way, I’d love to chat 🤍
