Support As A Small Business
Here’s one of the biggest and hardest things I’ve learned over the past four and a half years of owning my own business: the people who truly want to support you will—without hesitation and without needing to be convinced. And the ones who don’t… will reveal themselves over time.
This can be a really tough reality to accept. There are so many people in the photography and wedding industry that it often feels like you’re constantly fighting to be chosen. And there are always people you expect to be in your corner—until they show you otherwise. Maybe you thought these friends would support you, but instead, they expect things or stay silent when you know they’re looking for a photographer.
Maybe I’m going to step on some toes here, but… it shouldn’t matter. We live in a world where everyone wants to share their opinions and believes theirs is the correct one. But their opinions don’t define your success. The truth is, support often comes from the most unexpected places—people who see your work as both art and a business, not just a little side gig. Strangers who stumble across your work and instantly believe in you. Clients who go out of their way to refer you because they want the world to see what you do.
It’s easy to dwell on the ones who don’t support you, but it’s far more important to focus on the ones who do—the ones who comment, who book your sessions, who send messages saying, “I love your work.” The ones who invest in you, not just financially but emotionally. In the end, you don’t need approval from people who never cared. You need to pour your energy into those who do.
So keep going. If you’re passionate about what you do, keep creating, keep showing up, and keep sharing what you love. Because the right people will see it. And most importantly, you will know that you are building something worth believing in.
Let go of expectations. Let go of needing validation. And remember: the people who want to support you, will.
